This ancient baoli, central Delhi's oldest monument, is the centre of New Delhi not far from Janpath. The photo shows the backdrop of the high rise offices around Connaught Circus. Possibly built in ancient times by King Agrasen, it was rebuilt in the 14th century.

Pigeons love to sleep on the ledges; bats nest on the ceiling of the bottom chamber. The well is reputed to be haunted and the rough masonry has a certain hard bleakness. The local rock is hard enough for the sides of the well to be stable enough without the need for buttresses, unlike the well at Neemrana.

The gates open at 8am, the best time to visit before local schoolboys run down the 108 steps, maybe to see if anyone has fallen into the huge circular well shaft.
