Gangtey monastery sits on a ridge top and is a stunning example of Bhutanese archtecture.
As you travel from west to east in Bhutan the first Nyingma monastery you come to is Gangtey. Prior to that the monasteries have been in the Drukpa tradition. It was founded in the early 17th century by Gyalse Pema Thinley, the grandson and reincarnation of the great terton Pema Lingpa. 'Terton' means someone who discovered hidden 'treasures' or Buddhist teachings hidden until an auspicious time when there was someone who could comprehend them.
From Gangtey we walked through the Phobjikha valley where Black Necked Cranes arrive on their winter migration.
