Rajasthan - An exhibition of Photographs, Embroidered textiles & Paintings
A selling exhibition at the Chapel Gallery in Sheffield.
Rajasthan is probably the most popular destination in India, famous for its forts & palaces, textiles, colourful turbans, miniature paintings & camels set against the semi-desert landscape & the forested Aravali hills.
The major towns all have their own colours - the white of Udaipur, the golden sandstone of Jaisalmer, the blue of Jodhpur & the famous pink of Jaipur.
The quieter charms of Rajasthan can be found off the beaten track in places like the once powerful town of Alwar just two hours from Delhi airport; in blue painted Bundi with its palace, fort, dozens of stepwells & relaxed atmostphere; & in Shekawati, a region of dusty villages famous for its painted havelis & our favourite guest house, at Nawalgarh, located between Jaipur & Bikaner.
And then there’s all the places in between.
I'll be giving guided talks around the exhibition at 2pm on Sunday 19th and again at 2pm Saturday 25th October. I'll talk about my interest in Indian textiles over the last 45 years, my belated appreciation of miniature paintings and how I eventually found my photographic muse in a particular form of neglected Indian architecture.
This exhibition is open for just 6 days then the items that have been gathered return to the Silk Road Gallery on Sharrowvale Road where we open Friday & Saturdays 11-4.30 as normal. The Silk Road is also open during the exhibition.
Hope to see you.
