Shrine at Gangvo Kund, Dedadara, Gujarat | Stepwell Photos

A small shrine set into the beautifully carved stone blocks of the Gangvo Kund stepwell at Dedadara. 

It was a hot afternoon in January when we arrived at this beautiful stepwell near the old fort town of Wadhwan. It's set among temples in a quiet and dusty square on the edge of the village.
Steps hewn from a warm-coloured stone lead down on all four sides to a small rectangular pool. The blocks of stone have been precisely cut and fit together perfectly, mostly without mortar.

A garland of marigolds has been left on the intricately carved shrine that sits perfectly among the stone steps.
