A view of the magnificent 9-storey stepwell in Jhunjuhnu, Shekawati, with contemporary graffiti.
Built by Queen Mertani following the death of her husband.
Similar to the Neemrana stepwell built maybe 200 years earlier but less finessed, it failed in an attempt to get World Heritage status when we first visited 15 years ago. When we arrived in 2017 the massive gate was locked which has at least stopped littering. The gatekeeper brought the key from the market.
At one end there are towers which supported the lifting year to bring up water with the aid of a buffalo or two. The water was lifted into a series of settling tanks which filtered out the silt.
Landscape format.
