Photograph of Bodnath Stupa, Kathmandu, Nepal
Bodnath is the site of a magnificent Buddhist stupa just outside Kathmandu.
Stupas are reliquary buildings found throughout the Buddhist world that contain sacred objects and texts and sometimes the cremation ashes of high lamas. They are powerful symbols that remind you that you are in a place of spiritual significance.
The huge stupa at Bodnath is the largest in Nepal. It is place where Tibetans gather at dawn and dusk to make the kora, or holy path, around the stupa. The air is thick with the vibrations of many centuries of the quiet chanting of Om Mane Padme Hum.
It's a place of great beauty. Walking round the Bodnath stupa you may find that all sounds have momentarily vanished and find yourself in a deep and profound silence.
The man in the photo is paying his respects to the Buddha, symbolised in the form of the stupa.
