Photograph of traditonal dancing in Padum, Ladakh
India’s Republic Day is celebrated on 15th August. In 2012 we happened to be in Padum and watched the event on the polo ground.
Ladakhis are no more interested in the speeches of politicians on public holidays than we are, but the dancing always goes down a treat. Ladakhi dance, as befits the thin air, is slow with careful, formal movements that may break out into a short final crescendo.
One of the highlights involves the elder men dancing with carefully balanced jugs full of milk on their heads, with inevitable consequences.
Landscape format. 2012.
