Prayer Flags at Pangong Tso, Changtang, Ladakh
Photograph of Prayer Flags at Pangong Tso, Ladakh
Pangong Tso is a long thin lake in the Changtang region in the north east of Ladakh on the border with Tibet, China. Two-thirds of the length of the lake is in China but the wider parts of the lake and the bulk of the water is in Ladakh.
Surrounded by beautiful mountains and big skies, it's a beautiful location. This prayer flag was draped over the branches of a small tree near the lakeshore.
Pangong Tso has featured in a couple of Bollywood films and Indian domestic tourists flock here to see the film locations and dress up and act out the movies - which has resulted in swathes of fixed tents rather too close to the edge of the lake, to the detriment of the peace and the wildlife.
Follow the track past the tents and eventually you come to the quiet village of Merak where nothing much has changed. There is a homestay, a small gompa and views towards Tibet.
