Royal Palace, Alwar | Photos of India

Regular price £25.00

The Royal Palace at Alwar with palm trees, seen across a sandy open square.

The town of Alwar, about 2 hours drive south of Delhi, is past its heyday and doesn't receive many visitors but the old Palace and adjacent stepped pond are a delight.
The Vinay Vilas Mahal or Royal Palace, now called, rather prosaically, the City Palace, was built at the end of the 18th century.  It would be interesting to go inside but it now houses local government offices and can't be visited.

I like the curved balconies and roofs - and the black stains against the pale sandstone - and the dusty square with the odd palm tree.
