About us
In April 2017 we opened a new showroom for our collection called the Silk Road Gallery and we'd be delighted to see you there. The Gallery is in a converted stable block in Sheffield's popular Sharrow Vale Road, a perfect location surrounded by cafe's, deli's, bakeries and small independent shops and galleries, details at the bottom of the blog. It's been a delight to see people turning up who remember us from the 70's and 80's and our old shop Bringing It All Back Home.
The ground floor is mostly furniture and photographs from our travels in India and Tibet. On the first floor there are two rooms of wonderful textiles, curious objects and unusual folk art including Indian miniature paintings as well as beautiful silk scarves and cashmere wraps. The velvet coat in the photo above came from Afghanistan in the early seventies, the large carved Lion Throne is from India, possibly Hyderabad. The object behind the large painted Buddha head is a verdigris copper make up box from India.

A couple of miles away we have a warehouse for the overspill! Which will be needed - we have a new shipment coming from India that will arrive in late May. We have paintings from different parts of India, in the photo below you can see Indian miniatures painted on old government paper from Rajasthan. Next to them are Warli paintings from the central Indian state of Maharashtra. Warli paintings are wonderful depictions of village life seen through the eyes of the Warli people. The Warli don't write their history, instead they tell their stories through their paintings. During Spring 2017 there is a wonderful exhibition of larger Warli paintings at Welbeck Abbey near Workshop where they also have a beautiful video showing preparations for a village festival.
We've had some of the collection for over 30 years and it's a real pleasure to be able to display these items again. The woven tent band and embroidered chevrons from Afghanistan are beautiful examples of the work of the Afghan Kuchi nomads. The beadwork door surround and many of the textiles are from Gujarat in India. It's almost impossible to find beadwork like this now but the Tree of Life bedspread is modern work and stunningly beautiful.
