In the 14th century Gwalior had a Muslim ruler with a tolerant attitude who allowed the creation of these superb Jain statues in the cliff faces leading up to the fort.
Later Muslim occupiers defaced many of the statues but they remain a magnificent testament to a time of religious tolerance.
