Photographs from India, Tibet and Nepal by Silk Road Gallery director Peter Bennion. There are two main themes to this collection of photographs - the Subterranean Stepwell Architecture of India and the Himalayan regions of Ladakh, Nepal and Tibet.
Stepwells were constructed over the last thousand years to access water in a region where the water table rises and falls with the monsoon. They can be modest constructions or as elaborate as palaces. Being underground they are hardly known and seldom visited, some are in pristine conditions, others are atmospheric ruins.
We’ve made many treks across the landscape of Ladakh and Zanskar - dramatic high altitude extensions of the Tibetan Plateau with Tibetan Buddhist culture and ancient monasteries. Our photos feature the monasteries and landscape of these regions and the people we’ve met on our travels.
